Commanding Officer - Commander G.L. (Gary) Reddy, CD

Cdr GL ReddyCommander Reddy was born in St John’s, NL, where he attended elementary and high school. He graduated in 1975 from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

He enrolled in the Canadian Forces Reserve in September 1969, serving for eight years with the 56th Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers and the Naval Reserve Division HMCS CABOT. In 1977, he transferred to the Regular Force.

He served as Bridge Watchkeeping Officer in HMCS SAGUENAY and OTTAWA, served as Navigating Officer in HMCS MIRIMACHI, as Communications Officer in HMCS ATHABASKAN and as Deck Officer in HMCS PROTECTEUR.

In 1982, Commander Reddy attended the Clearance Diving Officer course, following which he was appointed Officer-in-Command of the Yard Diving Tender 12 with the Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic). In 1986, he was posted to HMCS CORMORANT where he performed duties as Deck Officer and Submersible Technical Officer.

In 1990, he was posted to the United States under the Officer Exchange Programme, serving with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Centre at Indian Head, Maryland. On his return to Canada in 1992, he was appointed Executive Officer of Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic).

In 1995, Commander Reddy was appointed Executive Officer of HMCS CORMORANT and appointed Commanding Officer in January 1996. On July 2, 1997, as the last Commanding Officer, he conducted the paying-off ceremony for HMCS CORMORANT. Commander Reddy was next assigned to NDHQ Ottawa as the Director of Diving Safety. On completion of two years, he was appointed Executive Officer HMCS ST JOHN’S, a position he held until June 2001. In June 2002, he assumed Command of the Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic).

Commander Reddy was promoted to his present rank and posted to Canadian Forces Station St. John’s as Commanding Officer, effective 21 June 2003. On 1 May 2006, Commander Reddy was posted to the position of Assistant Canadian Forces Naval Attaché with the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff (Washington). In August 2008, Commander Reddy was posted to the position of Director, C4 and Technology Battlespace with the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre. He was appointed Commanding Officer, Regional Cadet Support Unit (Atlantic) in January 2009. Commander Reddy is a graduate of the Canadian Forces College, course 28.

Commander Reddy is married to the former Elizabeth C. McDonald of St John’s, NL. They have two children, Stephen and Gillian.
